Alberta Native Bee Council's LIVING LAWNS Fall Information Session

LIVING LAWNS is an upcoming free, web-based tool from the Alberta Native Bee Council intended to make it easy for residents and communities to convert conventional turf lawns into beautiful, functional native spaces. Turfgrass covers a significant amount of our urban landscape and requires considerable resources to maintain. By replacing even a portion of a conventional lawn with native plants, homeowners can reduce maintenance needs and create valuable habitat for Alberta's wild pollinators. Knowing where to start can be challenging! Uncertainties around cost, what plants are suitable for a region, and how to maintain a garden are all concerns for new gardeners. That's where LIVING LAWNS comes in. The tool will guide users through the process of planning their own native garden and create a customized blueprint based on their location, space, preferences, and aesthetic goals. Plans will include regionally appropriate native plant recommendations, estimated costs for plants and materials, visual design concepts, step-by-step maintenance guidance, and information about the pollinators the garden can support. The Alberta Native Bee Council's goal is to take some of the uncertainty out of lawn conversion and give Albertans practical tools to create native spaces that work for both people and pollinators.
